Results of the trial experiment

Chromatography of dying leaves

Chromatography of healthy leaves

Chromatography of dead leaves
The results of the experiment was fortunately proving my hypothesis. Eventhough the colors might not be clear in the pictures, the dead leaves had red pigment and yellow pigment while the dying leaves had green, red and yellow pigments and the fresh green leaves had yellow and green pigments. I was very happy upon seeing that result.
Learning experiences for the real experiment:
  • I should use a bit more alcohol because it gets evaporated and there is not much left when I do chromatography. So instead of using 10 ml for each container, I should use 20 ml.
  • The leaves should be cut into even smaller pieces so that the experiment takes a shorter time. This is because, when the leaves are smaller, more surface area is in contact with the alcohol so the colorizing of the alcohol will be faster.
